Job Details

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Human Resources is a significant leadership position that demonstrates substantial expertise in human resource management. The AVP will lead and manage the organization in the design, development, implementation, and provision of all Human Resources programs and services. This includes primary and/or secondary leadership of all functional areas to include: Employment, Compensation, Records, Benefits, Talent Acquisition, Employee Relations, Talent Management, Payroll, HR Accounting, Worker’s Compensation and Human Resources Information Systems. The AVP reports to the Associate Vice President for Human Resources and serves in an HR leadership role as a key member of the HR Executive Leadership Team.  In this capacity, the AVP works collaboratively with University and HR Leadership Team members to set and achieve the strategic direction of the Office of Human Resources. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

 

  1. Demonstrated ability to gain cooperation and support through effective use of influence and persuasion required; tact and diplomacy required.

  2. Demonstrated customer service focus in all decisions and actions required.

  3. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision; self-directed and detail-oriented to effectively oversee multiple projects simultaneously as well as manage large and diverse teams to deliver results within specified time frames.

  4. Experience in a dynamic, fast-paced organization, and serving as a strategic business partner to management.

  5. Demonstrated experience as a collaborative and collegial professional; results-oriented; customer-focused with effective organizational management experience.

  6. Must be able to adapt management style in diverse situations to achieve stated goals, e.g., directive vs. participative, etc. Must be able to interact professionally with individuals and groups at all levels and have the ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and be objective in all situations.

  7. Must be able to diagnose and solve complex problems, demonstrate sound judgment in decision making, and follow through on commitments to achieve them on time.

  8. Knowledge of and the ability to use various standardized office equipment such as telephones, computers, fax machines, copiers, etc.

  9. Knowledge of and ability to use various standardized word processing, database or spreadsheet preparation software.

  10. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to interact with individuals internal and external to the organization in an effective, courteous, and productive manner.

  11. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed.

  12. Excellent grammar skills and the ability to produce error-free correspondence and work products.

 


Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years of progressive Human Resources experience in positions of increasing responsibility from individual contributor positions to senior management positions, to include 5 years of supervisory experience. To be successful in this position, candidates must possess demonstrable experience in the supervision and mentoring of professional and support staff.
