The University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Athletics Director for Human Resources and Administration who will serve on the senior management team for the department. The successful candidate will assume responsibility for human resources at a high profile NCAA Division I organization, provide strategic leadership to the organization, and collaborate cross functionally to deliver and drive results to meet the department’s goals and objectives. The Department of Athletics manages 24 varsity sports programs and related events with a workforce of approximately 225 regular employees and 450 temporary employees.  Athletics is a people-centric organization that operates under a “Win. Graduate. Do It Right.” philosophy.

Responsibilities

This position will provide strategic leadership, guidance and oversight of Athletics Human Resources, serve as Senior HR Leader for the Department, and participate as a member of the UI Senior HR Leadership Council. The successful candidate will be responsible for partnering with leaders outside and within the department to lead, develop and initiate strategies that maintain compliance with regulations; positively influence the organizational environment; address a broad range of human resources issues; assess workforce development needs; and identify HR strategies that support achievement of organizational goals. This position oversees two HR Unit Representatives and other personnel as assigned. Day-to-day responsibilities include: deliver HR guidance to management team and employees; oversee talent acquisition processes, manage select recruitment, hiring and onboarding activities; approve all HR transactions; assist supervisors with performance coaching, progressive discipline, investigations and terminations; oversee employee engagement initiatives, surveys and evaluation of data; design and deliver staff development training; monitor compliances; oversee maintenance of departmental resources, including staff databases, organizational charts, Intranet and Policy Manual; and deliver excellent customer service.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of administrative and managerial experience in human resources in a complex, high-profile organization with multiple units/teams.
  • Demonstrate expert/leader knowledge and ability to:
    • Plan and develop an organization’s HR operations in order to increase individual and organization effectiveness;
    • utilize outstanding oral, written and electronic communications skills as demonstrated by (a) tailoring messaging to various audiences, including complex and highly sensitive information, (b) managing conflicts and investigations, and (c) delivery of staff development training.
    • Implement effective strategies for promoting a diverse environment based on the principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience (typically 1-3 years) working in one of the following is highly preferred:
    • Human resource management experience at a high profile NCAA Division I institution, or
    • Senior Human Resource officer/leader at a University with a high level of collaboration between University HR and local department/division.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational workforce planning and change management to align the workforce and culture to achieve organizational goals with measureable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated hands-on, collegial and collaborative leadership style that is effective throughout all levels of the organization.
  • PHR, SHRM-CP or other professional certification.

Terms of Employment: This is a 100% time, regular position with full University of Iowa benefits.  Salary range is $90,000 to $ $150,000.
