Leading Transportation and Logistics Company based in Conover, North Carolina is seeking a Manager of Benefits to support the organization in becoming an employer of choice. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. Reports to: Director of Human Resources

The successful candidate will be responsible to provide effective administration of employee benefits, proficient in navigating HRIS systems and will have expertise about the regulations that pertain to processing and management of Worker’s Compensation, Disability claims (STD & LTD), FMLA, PFL and Unemployment Insurance.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Human Resources will assist in the management of the Human Resources functions, with primary responsibility for administration of the day-to-day health & welfare and retirement programs.

This position serves as the department’s subject matter expert in all Total Reward programs. Performs all operational and transactional duties required to design, implement and administer employee benefit programs including, but not limited to health and wellness, insurance programs, income protection, retirement plans, and paid time off.

The ideal candidate also provides excellent customer service and educates employees on benefits plans, investigates new benefits programs, improves existing programs, administers all benefits programs, as well as designs employee benefits plans and provides analytical and technical support in the delivery of the benefit programs. 

Must be proficient in Human Resource Information Systems, ensuring data integrity, testing of system changes, report writing and analyzing data flows for process improvement opportunities.

This position will work collaboratively with the Director of Human Resources to ensure that the compensation program supports both short and long term business objectives and continues to be both competitive and cost effective while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality. 

Oversees the administration of the base salary and variable cash compensation programs including but not limited to job evaluation, job classification/reclassification, salary structures, and determining salary ranges using salary surveys. Conducts analysis of compensation within the organization, oversees competitive analysis, merit increases and salary structure and provides recommendation to senior leadership to ensure appropriate compensation practices across the organization and all departments. Participates in national and state wage and benefit surveys, assesses the competitiveness of wage and benefit plans, and recommends plan changes based on findings.

Designs and implements effective communication strategies to assure maximum understanding and appreciation of the total value of compensation and benefit programs and practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Benefits

  • Responsible for the administration of all employee benefit plans.

  • Maintaining current files on all benefit plans.

  • Manage employee benefit information on the appropriate insurance carrier websites and internal HRIS system.

  • Respond to staff inquiries regarding claims and benefit questions.

  • Process all benefit mailings and enrollment forms.

  • Work closely with our benefits consultants in all matters related to our health insurance plans.

  • Process all WC paperwork, handle all WC claims and respond to carrier inquiries.

  • Process and monitor all unemployment claims.

  • Monitor monthly reconciliation of health, life and all other insurance bills.

  • Resolve administrative problems with carrier/vendor representatives. Ensure plans are administered in accordance with federal and state regulations and plan documents are followed.

  • Act as a liaison between employee and insurance providers or broker to resolve benefit related problems and ensure effective utilization of plans and positive employee relations.

  • Acts as plan administrator of 401(k) plans and other plans.

  • Manage annual open enrollment process for all benefit programs including project management, education, communication, and the set up and maintenance of the HRIS.

  • Participate in developing goals, objectives and systems for benefits.

  • Manage HRIS and provide necessary reporting.

  • Responsible for contributing to a positive, collaborative team environment in the HR Department. Responsibilities from time to time may involve other disciplines within the HR team to move projects, deadlines and compliance forward.

  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Leave Administration

  • Manage and administer FMLA, short-term disability and other medical related leaves of absence to ensure timely reporting and return to work procedures are followed.

  • Prepare LOA paperwork for all employees including STD, LTD, FMLA and PFL claims and track status.

  • Maintain and compile leave reports and communicate with executives.

  • Participate in developing goals, objectives and systems for leave administration.

  • Prepare reports on benefits, WC, UI, STD, LOA.

  • Serve on the company’s Workplace Safety Committee, providing reports on claims and time loss.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by management.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • As deemed necessary by supervisor

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters preferred.
  • Eight to ten years of exempt level Human Resources experience in the area of Compensation and Benefits, and a minimum of two years of management/supervisory experience is required. Previous management experience in a transportation/distribution environment is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Leave and Benefits Administration for a midsize business with 500+ employees.

  • Must have one or more of the following national certifications: CEBS, CBP, CCP, SHRM-SCP, SHRM, CP, SPHR, PHR.

  • Excellent knowledge of principles and practices associated with administering and managing employee benefit programs, project management, and metrics reporting.

  • Practical experience administering benefit plans across all product lines, including but not limited to self-insured health plans and defined contribution retirement plans is required.

  • Knowledge of workplace policies and employment laws, including but not limited to Title VII, ADA, FMLA, ADEA, FLSA, ACA, DOL, IRS, HIPAA, Section 125, ERISA and their effect on employer sponsored benefit programs.

  • Demonstrated successful ability to build positive relationships and partnerships within department, across the organization and with external customers.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proven analytical ability.

  • Highly proficient skills in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Well developed and reliable decision-making, polished oral and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a close team.

  • Focus on delivering quality customer service and passionate commitment to service excellence and ethical standards of conduct.
