Yearly Salary Minimum: $160,000-$168,000

 
Description:

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in the country serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane and McHenry counties in the Chicago area.  As part of a regional transportation network, Metra provides safe, reliable, and efficient commuter rail service that enhances the economic and environmental health of Northeast Illinois. Metra’s vision is to be a world-class commuter rail agency linking communities throughout the Northeast Region.  In this context, Metra is seeking an experienced Chief Human Officer to oversee the agency’s human resources’ needs and the Human Resources Department’s 35 employees.  Metra’s Human Resources Department serves 2700 employees in both a union and non-union setting, with approximately 2250 employees represented by 17 unions. 

Reporting directly to the Executive Director/CEO, the Chief Human Resources Officer will plan, direct and control the overall operations of the Human Resources department to ensure that all functions of Employment Services, HR Administration, Workforce Planning and Medical Services are performed in an accurate, timely and effective manner. Oversee the development of departmental and divisional objectives, policies and procedures and monitors performance to ensure compliance.  Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidate can consider their growth potential.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

 

Requirements:
  1. Must have Bachelor's degree OR in lieu of degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four (4) years in human resources or related field.
  2. Must have ten (10) years of managerial Human Resources experience in talent management, training and organizational development, compensation and benefits, benefits negotiations, succession planning, strategic leader development, participation in and knowledge of recruitment and selection, drug and alcohol free workplace program, and FMLA; in-depth understanding of all employment laws, civil rights laws and Department of Labor regulations (wage and hour laws) preferably in railroading, transportation or related industry.             
  3. Must have seven (7) years of direct supervisory experience that includes day-to-day employee management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, conflict management, budgeting, hiring, discipline and/or termination.
  4. Experience in a key HR leadership role working directly with executive/senior level management.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with the Board of Directors, the media and/or other external groups and organizations.
  6. Strong and effective oral and written communication skills are essential.

Preference:

SHRM-SCP or SHRM-CP certification preferred.
