Western & Southern Financial Group has an immediate opportunity for a Director, Agency Human Resources.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Designs, develops, implements and administers Human Resources programs and policies that support the Western & Southern Agency Vision, Mission and business goals. Ensures that the Agency field HR programs are equitable, compliant with federal, state and local regulations and ethically sound. Assists Divisional Vice Presidents with Human Resources issues involving performance, production, behavior, policies and procedures. Interacts with all levels of associates throughout Western & Southern Financial Group, as well as other companies and industry organizations relating to Agency field Human Resources. Works with minimal supervision and is responsible to independently make a broad range of critical decisions, escalating to executive level associates when appropriate.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Partners with Agency senior leadership in the diagnosis, research, design, development, implementation and administration of Agency field Human Resources policies and programs that meet the business needs of the organization while maintaining internal fairness and equity, external compliance and ethical soundness.
  • Provides oversight and direction on the handling of Human Resources issues (performance improvement plans, investigations, terminations, employee grievances, lawsuits, discrimination claims, etc.)
  • Provides leadership, guidance and oversight to direct and indirect staff in an effort to automate tasks, bring on new systems as appropriate and maintain existing Agency associate related systems. This includes Case Management System, eForms (onboarding), eTalent (performance and succession), etc.
  • Manages and directs the leave of absence process, including personal, disability and ADA to ensure accurate and timely processing of all leaves and compliance with all applicable laws and Company policy.
  • Partners with Agency Sales and Clerical leadership to manage Agency’s Performance Management and Talent Management activities. This includes goal setting, competency development, performance assessment, training and development opportunities and identification of top talent.
  • Manages the compliance of Agency Human Resources policies, programs and processes to include EEO, DRP, HR investigations, licensing compliance, unemployment processing, etc.
  • Partners with internal stakeholders, Legal, Compliance, Internal Audit, etc., to ensure timely responses to investigations and request for information from government and regulatory agencies (EEOC, State Departments of Insurance, State Unemployment Agencies, etc.).
  • Conducts surveys and analyzes results to assess the effectiveness of current Agency field HR programs for the Agency sales and clerical workforce.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and develops staff. Provides direction to and development of associates through daily coaching, administration of the Performance Management Program and the creation and implementation of development plans.
  • Evaluates industry trends and major operational initiatives that may impact field associates and/or support.
  • Develops and executes strategic initiatives to provide an exceptional level of service to our clients.
  • Directs Agency HR associates to assure accurate, timely processing and maintenance of Agency agreement files and employment documents.
  • Participates as a member of the Agency Human Resources Leadership team to plan and implement strategic projects in support of Agency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.


Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated substantial experience and proven success leading a progressive HR management team in the development and delivery of HR management and generalist support for a multi-site and distributed workforce organization.
  • Proven leadership and generalist experience in the employee relations field with specific experience in design and administration of HR programs, policies and procedures.
  • Proven strong analytical skills, including demonstrated experience identifying and quantifying problems and opportunities and providing effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of Employment law.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to successfully interpret and communicate business needs between internal and external customers in a clear, focused and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of staff and management.
  • Must cite examples from work experience on identifying complex problems, quantifying the problem and providing applicable, equitable and legally defensible solutions.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail with excellent organization skills. Must be able to communicate effectively and persuasively to meet needs of the organization while complying with law, regulations and policies.
  • Proven strong project management skills must cite examples of developing, organizing, initiating and maintaining a project and successfully accomplishing set goals.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources or other related degree with heavy emphasis on employeerelations.

Computer Skills and Knowledge of Hardware & Software Required:

  • Proficient in Word Processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Working knowledge of standard HRIS systems.
  • Working knowledge of database applications.

Certifications & Licenses (i.e., Series 6 & 63, CPA, etc.):

  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR or SHRM-SCP) certification.

Position Demands:

  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects.
  • Travel as needed.
