Director, Compensation & Benefits

The Director of Compensation and Benefits is responsible for developing and executing the strategic vision for the compensation and benefits functions. This position will lead governance and optimization of HR systems and administrative processes and ensure they support the organization’s and Human Resource division’s short-term and long-term goals. Supporting a Total Rewards Strategy, this position will manage all compensation and benefit processes to ensure offerings remain innovative, cost effective and competitive in the marketplace.  

Major Duties & Responsibilities 
Executive Compensation
-Supports a broad range of executive compensation activities. Benchmarks executive compensation pay levels and bonus structures relative to market. Provides analysis related to senior officer pay and overall company financial performance. Analyzes information regarding bonus plan competitiveness, bonus targets, and eligibility. Responds to ad hoc requests for analysis in support of executive compensation programs. Serves as the secretary to the Executive Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.

-Oversees the evaluation and administration of all benefit programs. Analyzes benefit options and forecasts future costs. Develops budgets, recommends vendors, and analyzes benefit plan options to determine the most cost-effective benefit programs based on competitiveness in the marketplace, premiums, costs (Credit Union and employee) and participation. Ensures compliance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), leaves of absence, state disability, and other benefit  programs by remaining current on state, federal, and local laws and regulations pertaining to applicable benefits and implements necessary plan changes.  

-Administers the compensation plans (base and variable) in order to ensure compensation policies and procedures are administered fairly and consistently. Develops necessary budget as it relates to overall Credit Union compensation (base and variable). Works with vendors to establish a process for evaluating positions that ensures internal and external equity and confirms validity of vendor recommendations. Oversees the development, evaluation and maintenance of all job descriptions. Maintains guidelines by writing and updating pay policies and procedures. Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by understanding existing and new employment legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions.

-Provides oversight for key HR systems including, but not limited to, researching and resolving HRIS problems, analyzing unexpected results and addressing process flaws. Provides oversight to the development of user procedures, guidelines, and documentation. Oversees data integrity in HR systems by establishing necessary internal controls, analyzing data, and creating and conducting various audits. Develops data integrity protocols between the Human Resources and Finance divisions, and other internal departments. Oversees all report writing and analyzing data flows for audit and process improvement opportunities and accurate payroll processing.

-Manages direct reports to maximize productivity, efficiency, and the potential human assets of the company, including hiring, directing job assignments, monitoring staff performance, coaching, counseling, training, assuring compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational mission, values, policies and work rules. Appraises performance and provides recommendations for staff compensation, promotion, and termination, as appropriate.

-Partners with Talent Management and Organizational Effectiveness to develop policies and procedures to create a Total Rewards philosophy and assists in the coordination of the annual performance merit matrix to ensure approved budget levels are maintained. Provides coverage and support for other management level staff within the division.

-Promotes a positive relationship between the members (internal and external) and the Credit Union and understands that service delivery to members is the number one priority of the Credit Union. Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Completes all other tasks, assignments or functions as assigned and/or required. 


Knowledge & Skills
-Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and/or Finance or closely related field from an accredited college or university.

-Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in human resources with at least five (5) years managing Benefits and Compensation administration.

-SPHR/PHR and/or World at Work Certification Preferred.
