Village Super Markets, Inc. With a fair amount of autonomy, the HR Director will be accountable for the oversight and execution of Labor Relations and HR Services (Payroll, Benefits, Employment Law Compliance, and Employee Relations). This role is a key member of the HR leadership team and ideal for an HR subject matter expert who is ready to deliver results in a strategic role.   



Labor Relations -- Lead in the administration and enforcement of collective bargaining and labor relations practices for the company’s unions. Provide contract interpretation to supervisors in areas such as hiring practices, discipline, and administration of programs and policies. Handle grievances, arbitrations, dispute resolution, communications, contract negotiations and other legal matters and seek advice, when necessary, from the appropriate resources. Track and monitor grievances as well as develop effective strategies to reduce reported grievances and disputes. Ensure internal investigations are conducted and coordinated appropriately for follow-up and resolution. Collaborate with unions to resolve issues and address concerns  

HR Services –Supervise administration of existing (non-union) benefit plans for company operations, and -- as needed -- survey industry to determine company's competitive position in employee benefits. Provide counsel to the District HR managers and Management on HR-related issues. Assist in the development and maintenance of corporate human resources policies, procedures and practices. Act as a resource for the District HR team(s) to quickly and efficiently resolve associate issues and maintain a positive work environment. Ensure compliance with all legal requirements and company HR policies and procedures.



  • Bachelor’s Degree (Human Resources or Business Management preferred, but not required)
  • Master’s Degree (including MBA) ideal


  • 8-10 years HR generalist or comparable experience in a related role.
  • … or MBA plus 2 years’ experience HR leadership in the Grocery or Retail industry


  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills.
  • Highly developed mentoring, consultation, facilitation and coaching skills.
  • Broad knowledge of human resources principles and practices.
  • Customer service focus and experience, with a high sense of urgency and bias toward action.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based and/or project oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and be open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Demonstrated business acumen, experienced in understanding human resource needs, and identifying the appropriate solutions.
  • Acts as a change agent, by ensuring company strategy is supported through effective knowledge management, including communication, training, staff development, and performance improvement plans.
  • A strong negotiator with proven ability to impact and influence.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing strategic plans, as well as managing tactical project plans and effective implementation plans.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to deal with very sensitive/confidential or highly conflict-filled situation
  • Strong assessment and analytical skills.
