Hingham is looking for a Director of HR/People Operations to take responsibility for all of its core People Operations functions, including recruiting, onboarding, development and performance management, and payroll and benefits administration. You will be a key stakeholder and facilitator in building and implementing thoughtful processes to keep our team engaged, productive, and ultimately happy. You will be the major point of contact for all employees on HR needs and questions. Although we are almost 200 years old, we have a small, entrepreneurial team - just under 100 people - and we hold each other to high standards

Responsibilities - Things You’ll Get to Do

  • Culture: Collaborate with colleagues to sustain a compelling Hingham brand that showcases our vision, mission, and culture to attract diverse, experienced, and capable talent for our team. Create an engaging environment that helps us celebrate our wins dramatically and learn from our mistakes appropriately. Work closely with leadership on recruiting and organizational design. Set the tone and direction for company, alongside leadership team. Work through the challenges of a growing organization. Own all things people
  • Payroll and Benefit Administration: Responsible for managing payroll and benefits administration and supervising and coaching internal part-time staff working on payroll. Open to thinking on how we might improve/streamline this function. Manage external benefits providers to ensure compliance with applicable HR laws and regulations.
  • Recruiting: Partner with business units to sustain and improve our talent acquisition strategy. Proactively maintain a broad and deep network of prospective candidates from which to source. Identify opportunities to diversify our pool of prospective employees and manage EEO program
  • Onboarding: Develop and implement an employee onboarding program that infuses new employees with our culture and energizes them for what lies ahead
  • Performance Management and Development: Improve and sustain our performance management processes, including implementing practices in conjunction with the business units to enable employee professional growth and development. Identify repeatable opportunities for growth/development that can be shared across the business
  • Sensitive Situations: Provide company-wide support in complex or sensitive HR-related situations requiring independent judgment and detailed knowledge of applicable laws and regulations. Deal with grievances and violations invoking disciplinary action when required
  • Run a Tight Ship: Sustain and improve our employee policies, including internal policies and the employee handbook. Monitor adherence to these policies when appropriate and help other members of the leadership team in this regard. Work collaboratively with our external and internal auditors on annual audits

Proven Experience as HR or People Ops Director: 5-10 years of progressive and general HR experience demonstrating the capability to resolve complex organizational or employee relations issues, preferably in an environment where you were the sole operator for core HR areas or worked as part of small team

  • Strong analytic skills with an ability to translate business plans and goals into human resource capabilities needed to achieve results.
  • An ability to effortlessly build relationships with trust and respect
  • Active listening skills, an empathetic approach, and a natural tendency to seek positive outcomes
  • Strong self-management/drive and a meticulous approach to organization
  • The conviction to be a culture ambassador and do so with high-energy, a collaborative work style, and a roll-up your sleeves attitude
  • Excellent judgment on motivations, potential, and fit
  • Ability to prioritize and differentiate between what’s needed versus what’s wanted
  • A proven ability to communicate effectively and influence all levels of staff
  • An ability to stand firm and remain committed when necessary and facilitate discussion
  • The spine to make difficult decisions when necessary and execute without wavering
  • Be adept at handling multiple competing priorities and duties in a fast-paced, results-oriented, and rapidly changing environment
  • Experience with a previous implementation of a structured interview process; understanding of modern applicant tracking systems; sourcing across diverse talent pools
  • Comfortable with implementing structure
  • In-depth knowledge of legal requirements (Federal and Massachusetts employment law) related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance

  • Do you always dot your i’s and cross your t’s? Attention to detail is a must
  • Are you happy to lend a helping hand? We are a small, tight-knit group and at times all wear a number of different hats
  • Are you transparent and do you prefer addressing the elephant in the room? We pride ourselves on being upfront and honest. We do not have the time or energy for corporate politics
  • Do you pick up the ball that someone else may have dropped? We are looking for people that own the company goals beyond just doing their job
  • Are you OK with making a mistake? We are too, as long as we learn from them and don’t repeat them
