Position Summary

The Director, Labor and Employee Relations will be accountable for the provision of guidance, counsel, direction and best practice advice in regards to all labor and employee relations matters, including contract interpretation and negotiations, grievance and arbitration hearings, performance management

As a member of the senior leadership team the Director will be required to provide consistent, clear and ethical recommendations to address all HR matters arising from Contractual provision to persevere and protect the reputation of 92Y as well as enabling directors to effectively manage their functions.

 Major Accountabilities

  • Accountable for the development and implementation of 92Y’s collective bargaining and labor relations strategies, policies and procedures to facilitate the development of conducive and effective labor relations.
  • Responsible for contract administration, negotiation and interpretation of multiple collective bargaining agreements.
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to 92Y’s leaderships and management teams regarding impact of labor laws and union contractual obligations on program and operational initiatives.
  • Function as a center of excellence pertaining to all matters regarding employee relations; including motivation, leadership and performance management, providing pragmatic, legally sound, best practice counsel and where necessary ongoing support, coaching and guidance to line management.
  • Manage all aspects of discipline, grievance and arbitration processes as outlined in collective bargaining agreements and the finalization of disciplinary charges resulting from investigations and hearings.
  • Analyze witness testimony and factual evidence to compose decisions and executive summaries for review by the Associate Executive Director and other Executive Leadership Team members
  • Ensures adherence to 92Y’s employee relations philosophy and HR policies and practices, to foster a positive working environment for all employees (both represented and non-represented)
  • Responsible for the development and execution of ongoing training programs and policy development covering all aspects of labor and employee relations.

Requirements

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters in related field preferred
  • 10+ years of significant labor management and employee relations experience in both union and non-union environments.
  • Proven in-depth knowledge of all current relevant Federal, state and city labor and employment laws accompanied by the drive to keep up to date and understand future legislation.
  • Ability to work with and across all levels of the organization, including the capability to diplomatically influence Executive Leadership Team members, and to establish and maintain a highly ethical reputation.
  • Strong and confident interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective and collaborative working relationship with both 92Y employees and Union representatives.
  • Clear and strategic thinker, with ability to quickly identify root causes of problems and develop creative and strategic solutions.
