In support of the College's mission, we seek an outstanding, strategic human resources leader who is energized by the opportunity to develop a transformative HR function at Franklin & Marshall College.  The Director of Human Resources is a seasoned professional passionate about driving HR strategy and fostering a culture to enable all faculty and professional staff to do meaningful, impactful work at the highest possible level in an inclusive environment.

The Director is a valued member of the leadership team and proactively recommends, implements, and evaluates strategies and plans to Senior Staff that will assure that the College attains its objectives related to the employee resources of the College.  To be successful, the Director must be able to collaborate with and influence a diverse group of faculty and professional staff, and fully understand the business needs, drivers, strategies, goals, and expectations of the College and its partners.

The Director is responsible for oversight and administration of all HR services and functions, including staffing (planning, recruitment, and hiring and retention of professional staff), compensation and benefits, legal compliance and development of policies, professional development, performance management, employee communications pertaining to HR issues, and employee relations.

The Director leads the HR staff in the delivery of comprehensive HR services in alignment with the strategies and mission of the College.  The Director demonstrates progressive management values and standards, supporting the development and sense of shared direction and purpose for the HR staff.  As such, the Director exhibits the highest degree of personal integrity, ethics, and emotional intelligence, and develops the same values within the HR staff.  The Director currently reports to the College's General Counsel.

  • Master's Degree in a related field is strongly preferred, and SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR or equivalent certification is required.
  • Minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible experience as an HR professional, with experience in compensation and benefit plan design and administration; employment and benefits law; strategic planning; and recruitment.  The College has a strong preference for candidates with prior experience in higher education.
  • Significant (7+ years) substantive supervisory experience.
  • A passion for and demonstrated experience integrating HR strategies with an organization's core objectives, and a strong track record as a strategic partner with exceptional consulting capabilities
  • Strong leadership and management skills, including proven ability to engage and develop staff, foster teamwork, diversity and inclusion, innovation, continuous learning, and a respectful workplace.
  • Superior judgement, conflict resolution, negotiating and creative thinking skills to solve complicated people and organizational issues
  • Demonstrated project management and facilitation skills in an environment with multiple and competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience with HRIS/ERP systems for HR and payroll
  • Experience in international exchange issues (J1 visas/SEVIS)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, judgment, and communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts to a general audience.
