About the Position

CPD is seeking a Director of Talent Management and Human Resources committed to supporting a well-functioning, highly-productive, diverse, inclusive, and positive work environment where our talented staff can thrive.

This position will work closely with a range of individuals within and outside of the organization to develop and implement programs and practices that recruit, retain, and develop staff; ensure compliance with employment laws and practices; and otherwise support the needs of a growing and highly effective workforce in ways that align with our overall mission and values. This person must demonstrate effective and efficient project management, and must be capable of exercising initiative, discretion, and good judgment. This position will report to the Chief Operating Officer.

Responsibilities 

Include but not limited to:

Hiring & Retention

  • Develop and lead an organization-wide strategy for recruiting and retaining high-quality, diverse staff, including identifying talent within and outside the organization;
  • Establish effective on-boarding and off-boarding policies and practices; ensure consistent implementation and follow through; 
  • Support hiring managers providing training, guidance, drafting job descriptions, screening candidates, and sharing best practices;
  • Ensure that compensation is externally competitive and internally consistent;
  • Support employees dealing with personnel challenges, whether with their supervisor, peers, or direct reports;
  • Coach supervisors on how to deal with problematic performance issues and participate in the development and execution of performance improvement plans;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned to meet the needs of the organization;

Employee Engagement and Development

  • Conduct a continuing study of all personnel policies, programs, and practices to keep the organization abreast of current practices and informed of new developments;
  • Determine and recommend employee engagement practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of staff engagement;
  • Create systems to collect and review staff feedback and conduct internal reviews to ensure organizational learning and improvement;
  • Work with staff and managers to foster an environment that welcomes and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Work collaboratively with our staff union to ensure compliance with the spirit and the letter of our Collective Bargaining Agreement and productive engagement through our Labor Management Committee;
  • Design and lead high-quality professional development trainings and other learning opportunities that are aligned with performance standards and improvement needs for staff;

Performance Management

  • Develop a robust performance management strategy tied to quantitative and qualitative organizational goals;
  • Create systems to ensure that supervisors provide meaningful and actionable evaluations;
  • Develop, initiate and maintain effective programs for workforce retention, promotion and succession planning.

 

Requirements

Qualifications

In this role, organization, people skills, and having a proven track record in HR are paramount. You should have:

  • High degree of professionalism, tact, initiative, and diplomacy
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion
  • High level of flexibility and adaptability
  • Advanced organizational skills with a proven ability to multi-task in an efficient and effective manner 
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Creative and strategic thinking skills and an innovative spirit
  • Commitment to social justice, including a sophisticated understanding of, and deep commitment to, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • High emotional intelligence, including a track record of employing emotional fortitude, awareness, and skill to navigate, with calmness and confidence, complex and difficult relationships and interactions between staff.

Education and Work Experience

  • Significant experience in human resources such as
    • A bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field and 5-7 years of experience in human resources field, OR
    • A master's degree in Human Resources Management and 4 years of experience in the human resource field, OR
    • Ten years of experience in the human resource field;
  • At least 5 years of experience working in progressive non-profit organizations with experience working in a community organizing setting preferred;
  • Experience with change management on the organization level;
  • Skilled trainer/coach of all levels in individual and group settings;
  • Knowledgeable about HR conventions and law;
  • Experience in building strategies and approaches to diversity, equity and inclusiveness.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 12 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
