The Director of Total Rewards directs the planning, design, implementation, maintenance and administration of all compensation and benefits programs in order to maintain the organization's objectives and competitive position in the marketplace. This position is also responsible for the company’s time & payroll functions.  Compensation responsibilities include base and total cash compensation programs, job evaluation, long-term incentive programs, and executive compensation. Benefits responsibilities include life, health, disability, and profit sharing programs.  Time & payroll responsibilities include oversight of day-to-day operations and compliance matters.   


The successful candidate will be a broad-based business executive with strategic insight, strong business acumen and proven, in-depth experience in all aspects of HR Leadership. Specific experience as an actively contributing member to an executive leadership team of a major, respected, people-focused organization is required.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes comprehensive benefit programs to ensure that a competitive advantage is maintained for employment and morale purposes, while adhering to budgetary guidelines.
  • Develops and executes wage and salary programs and policies to attract, retain and reward a competent employee base. Develops state of the art pay structures inclusive of variable plans and executive compensation.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, including but not limited to EEO, DOL, ERISA, SOX, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA and FLSA.
  • Responsible for providing customer service in delivery and administration of all Total Reward programs including Time & Payroll administration. Develops and implements comprehensive communication related to administering and educating about Total Reward programs.
  • Manage the operations of Time & Payroll and associated staff to ensure the highest level of reliability and performance.
  • Represents the organization with external parties from a position of leadership. Manages vendor and consultant relationships, contracts, and projects.
  • Builds relationships with HR and business partners across the organization. Instills trust with all levels of management and fosters collaboration to build mutually beneficial solutions and involvement with other leaders.
  • Provides candid, objective, direct, honest, and open communication to department staff as well as field and headquarters personnel.
  • Identifies opportunities to leverage technology, improve service, improve cost-effectiveness, and to explore the feasibility of automation and/or outsourcing.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of current programs. Identifies opportunities to strengthen programs and/or their linkage to human capital and its performance. Streamlines administration with emphasis on user-friendliness.
  • Actively participates in on-going development of HRMS support and strategy including links and/or interfaces to payroll and other related systems.
  • Provides strategic leadership to one or more major national or regional functions; guides the development of functional and financial goals that support the achievement of the Company's Mission and objectives.
  • Supervises assigned employees including staff selection and training; planning, assigning and directing work; conducting performance reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices and ensures that employees observe all safety procedures and practices in order to prevent injuries or damage; schedules periodic safety meetings and solicits recommended changes to improve safety procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 12 years of broad based compensation, benefits, HRMS and/or human resources experience.
  • SPHR/PHR, CCP, CBP and/or CEBS certification preferred.



  • Deep knowledge and experience in compensation and benefits.
  • Working knowledge regulations in the areas of time & payroll, stock plan administration, and deferred compensation programs.
  • Ability to credibly influence others with his/her point of view.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all teams, departments, management levels within the company, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand the vision of the organization and translate it into specific plans and actions that achieve desired results.  
  • Ability to have an organization-wide perspective and understand how the business operates.  
  • Must be a strong executor who has the ability to assist with strategy development at all levels of the organization to drive business performance.  
  • Demonstrates ability to hold self and team accountable for actions and results.

  • Requires occasional travel.
