PBS Distribution (PBSd) is looking for a Head of HR who can embody the qualities of teamwork, collaboration and integrity and has a passion for public media.  
Note: A search firm has been retained for this position.
Position Summary
The Head of Human Resources reports to the Co-President and is both a strategic and hands-on role that provides full cycle Human Resources support to the PBSd team.
In partnership with the Executive Team, the Head of HR is key to creating the policies, practices, and initiatives that support a culture that reflects integrity, excellence and entrepreneurialism across work groups and locations.
Major Responsibilities
HR Strategy and Policy:
  • Works with Executive Team to define and evaluate HR strategies, and execute and monitor strategic HR initiatives.
  • Creates an HR strategy and plan to support PBSd’s goals. Recognizes marketplace trends and the impact on the business and translates these challenges into HR initiatives that align with the business strategy.
  • Counsels and provides guidance to managers on their workforce strategies. Advises on organizational design decisions. Collaborates with senior management team to design and plan staffing needs, and manage a workforce plan.
  • Implements, maintains, communicates and regularly updates HR policies and Employee Handbook with the dual objectives of aligning practices with culture and values, and ensuring that proper compliance is followed.
Recruitment, Onboarding and Staffing:
  • Manages the full recruitment and selection process, and oversees the recruitment and onboarding activity for all staff members.
  • Develops and implements programs for talent acquisition, including recruitment branding.
  • Coordinates with hiring managers to deliver a consistent onboarding and new hire orientation experience that ensures a consistent understanding of the company culture, processes and practices.
Employee Relations:
  • Ensures consistent practices on employee relations matters.
  • Provides advice and counsel to managers, and works directly with managers and employees to assist them in resolving issues.
  • Recommends and suggests performance improvement plans and ensures proper and accurate documentation is maintained.
  • Consults with General Counsel and/or legal counsel as appropriate on employee relations matters.
Learning and Development:
  • Designs and implements programs and processes to develop needed skills, knowledge and experience, and plan for successors to key roles.
  • Continually assesses the effectiveness of the performance management program. Ensures the alignment of the program with the business’s natural cycles and talent development programs.
  • Creates programs that are unique to PBSd and a part of a core experience that develops and retains top talent.
Performance Management:
  • Develops, communicates and administers ongoing performance feedback process. 
  • Trains and briefs managers on effective feedback techniques.
  • Regularly evaluates the process and the needs of the organization. Makes recommendations for effective program.
Compensation, Benefits and HRIS:
  • Designs and maintains a competitive compensation program. Periodically conducts compensation program review, working with outside consulting firms to ensure that compensation plans and positions are competitive, fair, and align with company strategy.
  • Administers and makes recommendations on the annual merit/incentive review process.
  • Oversees all company-sponsored benefit plans, including health and welfare, employee leaves, retirement and perqs.
  • Evaluates benefit programs annually with the goal of maintaining a competitive, yet cost-effective benefits program while reflecting the culture of the organization. Works with benefits broker to negotiate annual benefits renewal.
  • Directs benefits administration, enrollment and open enrollment.
  • Oversees the administration of payroll, including processing of new hires, separations, etc.
  • Oversees the administration and management of HRIS and HR related data. Prepares regular management reporting and analysis. Continuously looks for opportunities to streamline, collect and utilize HR data, improve delivery and understanding of core HR processes.
  • Evaluates automating processes, makes recommendations, and implements/rolls out new systems to the team.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation to ensure organization's compliance.
  • Maintains responsibility for organization compliance with federal, state and local legislation pertaining to employment.


Work Experience
  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressive business and human resources experience, including prior generalist experience in all areas of HR.
  • Supervisory skills; this position manages an HR Generalist.
  • Experience as the lead business partner in a small, fast-paced company, or with a division or subsidiary of a large or medium sized company.
  • Experience playing an active role in a major organizational change or growth initiative.
  • Preferred experience working with creative professionals, and a sales-oriented, client-focused, and deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience developing, communicating and enforcing policies and procedures of the organization. Experience implementing and managing consistent practices across locations and functions.
  • Experience administering payroll and benefits, regularly using an HRIS system, and managing HR data. Experience assessing and successfully implementing a new HRIS system a plus.
  • Experience in successfully promoting a culture of Diversity and Inclusion, and managing D&I initiatives, including experience integrating early career hires with mid-career staff.
Education and Training
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Human Resources Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Human Resources professional certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP) preferred.
Skills and Attributes
  • Human Resources Management. Demonstrated skills in the basic management and leadership of all Human Resources functions, strategy development and implementation and assessment and evaluation of program/system effectiveness.
  • Business partner or internal consulting skills. A collaborative business partner, who aligns HR strategy with business goals, and places a high premium on internal client service and satisfaction. Able to work effectively as a partner on key initiatives with the senior management team, and develop strong relationships.
  • Organizational skills. Strong attention to detail while keeping an eye on the big picture. Self-motivated and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Communication skills. Exceptional ability to communicate and collaborate with all levels of employees. Excellent presentation skills.
  • Relationship Management. Proven track record of building strong relationships. Excellent management, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Technology Savvy. Advanced knowledge about current HR technology and what various systems can do to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and experience with and within HR.
