Job description:

The Human Resources & Accounting Assistant is a part of the central office of Purpose Built Schools Atlanta (PBSA), a start-up organization partnering with Atlanta Public Schools to turn around four of the district’s most challenged schools. Reporting to both the Director of Human Resources and the Controller, the Human Resources & Accounting Assistant is responsible for providing human resources and accounting support to all schools in the PBSA cluster (Thomasville Heights Elementary School, Slater Elementary School, Price Middle School, and Carver High School – opening in 2018).


The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, comfortable with ambiguity, and is inspired by working in a small start-up environment. A successful Human Resources & Accounting Assistant will operate with a sense of urgency, possess excellent customer service skills, build strong relationships, and be motivated by the mission of PBSA. The Human Resources & Accounting Assistant will be located in the PBSA central office, which is located in a school, and will travel to the other school sites (within Atlanta), as needed.


Responsibilities include:

The Human Resources& Accounting Assistant supports the human resources and finance departments by performing some of the basic administrative duties. This may include preparing deposits, processing payments, collecting time and attendance data, filing, scanning documents, maintaining financial and personnel databases, files, and spreadsheets, and any other tasks that contribute to the function of the human resources and finance departments. The Assistant will also be expected to provide administrative support to other departments in the organization, including operations.


  • Manages the background check process for all employees, contractors and volunteers, including all communication with candidate, schools, and Atlanta Public Schools district office.
  • Creates all job postings and manages recruiting database workflow.
  • Maintains all employee records, including hard copy files and electronic documents (contracts, benefits enrollment, etc.)
  • Maintains all financial and accounting records with an organized filing system.
  • Maintains department and employee confidence by keeping all human resources and financial information confidential.
  • Handle all administrative duties for the human resources and finance departments, including other administrators, as directed.
  • Serves as primary backup for placing Purchasing System orders during ramp-up for new school year.
  • Checks and distributes mail daily, coordinates periodic office supply orders for operations.
  • Participate in onboarding activities with employees.
  • Other duties as reasonably assigned by the appropriate administrator.






  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 3+ years of relevant human resources, accounting, or administrative assistant experience required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications – Outlook, Excel, Word.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with ability to multi-task and manage deadlines.
  • Self-starter with ability to perform within ambiguity and an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentially.
  • An accessible, visible, and flexible style that inspires trust and confidence.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
