Privately held successful corporate HQ office currently in Oakbrook Terrace, IL but moving to Schaumburg, IL is looking for an experienced HR Manager. This person will indirectly oversee two divisional HR Managers.  Our client is a leading global provider of engineered metal solutions.  Their success lies in their innovation, profitability and quality of product. The parent company operates multiple manufacturing operations in the Midwest to include forging, stamping, fabrication and has developed extensive experience in many different industries including agriculture, defense, wind power, construction, oil/natural gas, drilling, off-highway and energy.

Qualified candidates must have union negotiation and manufacturing experience!

 Corporate level responsibilities:

 Serve as a Business Partner for Field Operations Leadership and educate on HR policies/procedures and Government regulations

  • Provide functional/operational human resources guidance through planning, organizing and controlling the activities of the Human Resources Department
  • Serve as functional resource for employee base, ensuring their understanding and compliance with benefits and HR policies and regulations.
  • Keep management advised of potential problem areas and recommend/implement solutions as appropriate.
  • Evaluate reports, decisions, and results of client group in relation to established goals.
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to support continual improvement.
  • Plan, organize, and manage all activities of the HR Dept.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of client group's goals, objectives and systems.
  • Manage recruitment effort for all exempt, non-exempt, and hourly employees; monitor recruitment program; employee relations counseling; performance planning.
  • Manage and maintain department records and reports.
  • Supervise 3-4 indirect division level HR reports
  • Ability to travel to plants as needed – estimated at 10-15%

 Prior meaningful experience required in the following HR practice areas:

 Employee benefit plan administration 

  • Understand with great specificity the benefits provided within each benefit plan offered by the company, including their cost, and how to administer/assist with plan participants.
  • Manage and participate in the annual benefit plan renewal process, evaluating potential changes to existing plans, alternatives to existing plans or carriers, negotiating (through our broker) with the carriers on plan offerings and costs.  
  • Provide expertise in employee benefits, knowing what is available in the marketplace and how plans can best fit together.   Understanding fully insured vs self-insured plans, FSA's, HSA's, other ancillary and supplemental plans.  Having worked with self-insured benefit plans a huge plus.
  •  Support ongoing employee Healthcare/Employee benefits administration and vendor relationships. 

Post retirement plan management 

  • Provide a deep understanding of ERISA laws that govern retirement plan management.
  • Experience as a retirement plan administrator for these plans (401K etc.).  Experience handling participant transactions; counseling and providing guidance to participants.
  • Experience in annual plan testing, interfacing with TPA’s on compliance and annual reporting to participants, annual tax filings and annual audits with accounting firms. 

Workers Compensation Claims Management 

  • Maintain an expert understanding of the workers comp laws in Illinois (MO and TN laws a huge plus).
  • With that legal knowledge, provide open WC claims management (collaborating with legal assistance and carrier involvement) to conclude open WC claims cases expeditiously, economically and fairly within the construct of the WC laws.
  • Work effectively with plant managements regarding Worker Comp & Safely Issues. 

Union shop experience 

  • Possess a general understanding the legal environment (federal laws via NLRB rulings and Washington policy) in a union work force environment.
  • Prior experience with the union grievance process to provide support to division level HR personnel in performing these tasks.
  • Possess a familiarity with a collective bargaining agreement (contract), and how to use that contract to manage the production floor fairly and in accordance with the guidelines of the CBA.  
  • Possibly participate as second chair on behalf of the company in future collective bargaining agreement negotiations.

Payroll Administration 

  • Prior experience processing payroll to ensure payroll procedures are fulfilling requirements to process payroll in a union environment (CBA defined job classifications), with proper withholdings for 401k contributions and other deductions.  
  • Knowledge of ADP Workforce Now Human Capital Management (HCM) Suite a plus.


  • BA/BS in Human Resources – Master degree a plus with 5 plus  years experience
  • Desired: PHR/SPHR/SHRM Certification
  • Experience working with manufacturing and Union a plus
  • Knowledge of applicable state, federal, local employment/labor laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated Change Management skills and leadership
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels within org. verbal, written and presentation
  • Proficient in MS Office
