Job Details

The Human Resources Director will have responsibilities that are broad and strategic, as well as tactical.  They include developing, implementing, evaluating, and recommending changes to Room to Read’s worldwide Human Resources policies, procedures, and programs. The Director provides best practice guidance in the following areas: employee engagement, talent management, payroll and benefits, and oversight of our recruiting function.

 This position reports to the Chief Talent Officer and is based in San Francisco. The Human Resources Director leads a team of 4, with direct supervision of the HR Manager (Recruitment and Employee Relations), the HR Associate Manager (HRMS, Benefits & Payroll) and HR Associate. The HR Director works closely with regionally-based and country office HR and other personnel to ensure consistent, worldwide Human Resources practices. Some international travel is required, based on the business needs in a particular year.

 Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serves as Global Office liaison to Country Office HR colleagues in Asia to implement scalable HR practices that are aligned with our worldwide business strategy
  • Identifies and implements improvements to global Human Resources policies, procedures, and programs across all countries of operation
  • Mentors and leads team of 4 HR staff members, including direct supervision of 3 team members
  • Acts as the HR Business Partner for all staff working in the Development and Program Design and Technical Assistance teams. Supports the employee relations function managed by the HR Manager for the Accounting and Finance, Internal Operations and IT teams.
  • Leads renewal process and makes recommendations for organizational business insurances and employee benefits
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures organization's compliance in Global Office markets (United States - CA, NY, MD, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, and Hong Kong)
  • Serves as HR lead on the Annual Planning & Budgeting process, including creation of guidelines, templates, and workforce planning for worldwide personnel
  • Advises Global Office leaders on talent matters including change management, team building and organizational design and effectiveness
  • Leads the worldwide Capacity Building Initiative to build staff capacity to position Room to Read for continued growth and success
  • Recommends, evaluates, and participates in staff development
  • Develops and implements employee satisfaction and retention programs
  • Conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separation
  • Enhances and implements Human Resources, legal, and tax policies for expatriates, third country nationals, and business travelers (in consultation with outside experts as needed)
  • Prepares Global Office Human Resources salary and benefits budget, manages and owns expenditures, and reports on variances to budget
  • Consults with legal counsel or other external experts as appropriate
  • Is the second in command and is responsible for the day-to-day overall, HR operations
  • Mentors and coaches staff and foster a collaborative, team-oriented work environment
  • Other duties as necessary




  • Bachelor’s degree, with 10+ years of relevant, professional experience
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of human resources administration
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment law and compliance practices
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide follow up on a timely basis and keep stakeholders informed of status of projects
  • Ability to analyze complex HR problems and develop effective solutions that balance multiple factors, including legal regulations, organizational culture and best practices
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing large-scale projects, balancing multiple commitments, and adapting effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in developing and implementing process improvements
  • Ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of human resources work
  • Customer-service orientation, with a focus on understanding and meeting the needs of staff across the organization
  • Effectiveness in working or volunteering in a non-profit that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead
  • Adept at using MS Excel & MS Word
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Detail oriented and extremely organized, while being a strategic thinker
  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
  • Proven track record of achieving results

  • PHR or SPHR certification
  • Master’s degree in Human Resource management or related Human Resources field
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
  • Experience living or working internationally
