Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among the Microsoft Corporation, Angelina Jolie and other interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. As the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child faces immigration court alone, KIND is dedicated to providing pro bono representation as well as a positive systemic change in both law and policy to improve the protection of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. KIND also engages in programming in Central America and Mexico to promote the best interests and protection of migrant children throughout the region.  Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, DC and has 10 field offices across the United States.


Reporting to the Executive Vice President, the Director of Human Resources is responsible for managing all aspects of the employment lifecycle for all of KIND’s 140+ nationally dispersed workforce.  Responsibilities include talent acquisition, benefits administration, compensation, payroll administration, performance management, policy implementation and employment law compliance.  The Director of Human Resources is based in Washington, DC and serves as a member of KIND’s senior management team.



Five to seven years’ experience in broad range human resources functions; Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field required; Master’s degree preferred; SHRM-CP or PHR certification preferred


  • Experience in a non-profit environment, particularly one with a rapid growth trajectory;
  • Possess a strategic approach to human resource management and ability to maintain progress towards established goals and objectives;
  • Business acumen and the ability to work with other components to integrate human resources functions;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with staff at all levels within the organization;
  • Experience with federal contract compliance as it relates to human resources functions;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment; and
  • Strong technological skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Work is generally performed within the office environment and includes regular interaction via phone and email with KIND’s national team.   


Position requires regular travel to KIND field offices throughout the year.
