The Columbia University Libraries seek a Generalist to join an HR team of 4 professionals, supporting an organization of approximately 400 employees, 150 of whom are union staff.


Responsibilities include:


  • Recruiting librarians, technologists, and support staff
  • Advising managers and staff on HR practices and policies including bargaining agreement work rules, performance management, progressive discipline, and grievance procedures.
  • Maintaining and analyzing HR data
  • Position classification of exempt and non exempt staff
  • New employee orientation, HR related training, staff recognition programs, diversity initiatives, exit interviews, and special projects.
  • Preparing content for the HR website.


Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and preferably 1 to 2 years directly related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Strong communication and coaching skills are required along with solid PC sills. Excellent judgment and problem solving skills are essential.

The salary range for the position is $53,000-$60,000 depending on experience. We offer excellent benefits and the opportunity to work in a multicultural and intellectually stimulating environment.
