Actors’ Equity association, the labor union representing over 50,000 stage actors an stage managers working in professional theatre nationwide is seeking an energetic and highly motivated person to serve as the Human Resources Generalist in its Los Angeles office.  The Human Resources Generalist serves as a strategic leader in the implementation and direction of human resources policies and activities and in the overall operations of the Western Regional Office by performing the following duties:

  • Serve as regional first contact for questions regarding the full spectrum of employee lifecycle activities including recruiting, onboarding, training, benefits, pay review, termination and off-boarding


  • Track and manage all data including but not limited to personal data, position and salary changes, benefit enrollment and employment status records, maintained in a Human Resource Information System (HRIS), currently ADP


  • Ensure compliance with AEA policy, staff union rules, and state and federal labor laws


  • Coordinate the overall administration of employee union contracts and employee handbook


  • Assist in negotiating staff collective bargaining agreements


  • Confer with and advise regional management to align each employee’s job duties to key organizational goals


  • Coordinate and guide the annual performance appraisal process


  • Serve as Western Region Staff Development liaison including coordination of staff orientations, training programs and service award programs
  • Provide general operational oversight for all Western Region Departments and coordinate additional duty assignments and special projects as needed


  • Direct the management and maintenance of office equipment/furniture (except computers, telephones and printers); repairs; inventory; capital improvements; vendors, and space requirements


  • Complete accounts payable entry, billing conflict resolution, regular banking deposits, petty cash management, employee re-imbursements, and coordinate monthly expense reporting guidelines as established by the Comptroller


  • Assist with the preparation of payroll


  • Ensure consistent application and compliance with Actors' Equity Association policies, budgets and union contracts


  • Champion a positive and engaged office culture by coordinating staff appreciation events, holiday parties and seeking opportunities to support the organization’s unique culture while promoting labor values


  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • BA or equivalent degree required, preferably in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience as an HR generalist required
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player with a desire to succeed
  • Supervision and management experience
  • Previous recruitment experience preferred
  • Previous, demonstrated HR experience managing with labor values preferred
  • Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs required
  • Prior experience with HRIS (ADP Preferred)
  • Prior experience with Accounting software (Great Plains Preferred)
  • Knowledge of accounting principles related to tasks assigned
  • Proactive problem-solving attitude a plus
  • Commitment to confidentiality, discretion, and integrity
  • Must maintain a working knowledge of federal and California employment law, PHR-CA
