Canal Alliance is the leading service provider and community advocate for Marin’s immigrants. Today, the organization reaches more than 3,500 people per year, who face multiple challenges. Canal Alliance delivers educational, legal, mental health, and job readiness services while facilitating clients’ access to community resources. Our programs successfully move low-income, Spanish speaking immigrants, who have fled their home countries to escape poverty and/or persecution, from crisis to stability.


2. Position

The Human Resources Generalist will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will work closely with Program Directors and Managers on both recruitment and employee retention.

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive human resources program that includes recruitment, onboarding, staff evaluation and employee development as well as retention. This role ensures compliance with all local, state and federal employment laws.

3. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the full cycle of recruitment. Activities include developing job specifications (including compensation), sourcing of applicants, leading screenings and orientations, conducting reference checks and implementing a recruitment tracking system.
  • Responsible for overseeing the annual staff evaluation process. In collaboration with Directors, defines the required competencies and wage ranges for each Agency role.
  • Supports directors and managers in developing and implementing professional development plans for staff.
  • Collects and reports on diversity, equity and inclusion data as well as other recruitment statistics.
  • Leads employee onboarding activities; answers employee questions and provides support to directors and managers when integrating new hires into the organization.
  • Coordinates and ensures completion of employee exit interviews. Reports outcome of same to management and tracks/maintains exit data.
  • Helps to maintain a competitive benefits package and leads employee recognition programs.
  • Designs new systems, processes, materials and training programs to support retention strategies, talent search and to ensure compliance and regulatory standards are met.
  • Supports the CFO in an annual review of the employee handbook for policy updates


4. Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or related field of study and at least two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Applicant Tracking Systems and HR databases
  • Experience with (phone and in-person) interviews, candidate screening and evaluation
  •  Familiarity with social media and other professional networks (LinkedIn & Facebook).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and project management skills
  • Strong team player with ability to work well with staff across programs and departments
  • Knowledge of Salesforce (preferred)
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (preferred)

5. Compensation


This is a full-time position with benefits. We offer a competitive salary with a benefits package that includes 3 weeks paid vacation a year, 12 days of sick leave a year and 100% paid employee medical & dental insurance.  In addition, there are 12 paid holidays annually, a 403(b) retirement plan and a Flex cafeteria plan.
