This position requires most of the “typical” HR duties but the job is anything but typical. There will be a high level of employee engagement in the field, strategic collaboration with Operations and creative problem solving.   • Work closely with the VP/GM to implement human resources progralms and policies at the local level

  • Collaborate with management team in recruiting, selecting and retaining top talent

  • Provide advice and guidance to management team on employment decisions

  • Assist management team with documented coaching and counseling

  • Conduct leadership development training for management team

  • Provide local training and development resources for employees

  • Adhere to all legally mandated federal and state requirements, including reporting

  • Provide information on and assist with interpretation of CalPortland policies

  • Participate with other human resources team members in providing input for corporate programs

  • Manage local human resources administrative activities, including reports and postings

  • Assist with new hire orientations and employee onboarding

  • Engage employees at all levels through frequent site visits, pulsing sessions and stay interviews

  • Work closely with the Safety Department, including attending Safety Meetings

  • Ensure Department of Transportation and Motor Vehicle Report requirements are met

  • Maintain excellent relationship with local Medical Review Officer and drug/alcohol testing facilities

  • Strategize with management team to ensure CalPortland is positioned as a preferred employer and respected community partner



Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management or equivalent


  • A minimum of 5 years Human Resource Generalist or Manager experience

  • Ability to travel locally up to 50% of the time

  • Strong communication and listening skills

  • Strong understanding of and experience with employment law

  • Analytical and measurement oriented

  • Ability to develop positive rapport with employees at all levels in the company

  • Must possess a high level of confidentiality and trustworthiness

  • Project Management experience

  • Strong collaboration and leadership skills

  • Public speaking and training skills

  • Motivated and energetic

  • Must be able to work flexible hours


  • Building Materials and/or Construction Industry experience

  • Familiarity with SAP ERP system for HR management


Conditions of Employment:

Successful candidate must submit to post offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen and background check. Some positions require FMCSA regulated on-going drug and alcohol testing.
