2017 SUMMER INTERNSHIP - This internship is for full-time students enrolled in an accredited university (Summer 2017 only).



The Human Resources Department supports the organization by providing the fundamental elements of: employee engagement, world class work environment, talent management, compensation, benefits, training and development.

The Human Resources Intern will directly assist the Vice President of Human Resources and Diversity, as well as other human resources managers, with a wide range of projects related to HR compliance, talent management, diversity and inclusion, recruiting, onboarding/orientation, training and development, employee benefits, and volunteer intern programs. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills (s)he may have acquired in school related to his/her particular areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting. He/she will gain a better understanding of the role that Human Resources plays in an international association setting, and be better prepared to work in the arena of human resources on a global scale. The candidate will also have opportunities to network with the SHRM programs, finance, and training and development staff.



The Human Resources Intern will learn the practical application of:

• Steps in the recruiting and hiring process, including: posting job openings, reviewing resumes, conducting telephone and in-person interviews, making job offers and negotiating starting salaries.

• The implementation steps and process of a talent management social media strategy.

• The importance of employment law and compliance, especially regarding employment eligibility, confidentiality, proper maintenance of employee files, and forms management.

• The interrelationship of HR and Finance in the areas of new employee paperwork, payroll issues related to onboarding and termination, use of an HR management database, and report generation.

• Employee benefits management issues related to plan renewal and open enrollment, benefits enrollment and termination, troubleshooting employee benefits issues, and the customer service aspect of benefits oversight.

• Planning and executing employee engagement activities related to employee service anniversaries and organization-wide events.

• The performance management system including uploading new hires into a process, troubleshooting issues on a case-by-case basis and tracking organizational progress within a process.



• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to successfully work as a team member and follow directions

• Strong presentation skills

• Professional demeanor and ability to exercise confidentiality and good judgment

• Proficient with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and Outlook



• High school diploma or equivalent and currently, or recently enrolled, in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in Human Resources

• Ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous assignments simultaneously

• Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications

• Student Member of SHRM a plus
