Manager, Compensation

Provides leadership, planning and project coordination for MAPFRE Insurance’s compensation function to ensure that compensation programs align and support the company’s goals and strategic direction. Manages, designs and administers the company’s compensation programs, policies and procedures including base pay structures, programs, short- and long-term incentive plans, market analysis, recognition and other programs incorporating best practices to promote a high performance culture. Develops and coaches compensation team members to optimize their contributions and potential.



  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent related experience preferred.
  • Experience: 9 - 11 years or Master's Degree equivalent plus 7 - 9 years.
  • Knowledge: Complete understanding and knowledge of industry, practices, standards, and concepts within field of work and broad business segment. Solid knowledge of management practices.
  • Decision Making: Influences development of overall objectives including long-range goals for the organization. Typically exercises judgment within broadly defined policies and practices. Establishes, modifies operating policies and procedures that affect subordinate units. Recommends modifications to broad operating policies which may impact projects, operations, and considerable expenditure risk and major portions of operations. Problems are generally diverse, complex and impact major business segments.
  • Supervision Received: Assignments are received in objective-oriented terms, and combine both strategic and tactical responsibilities. Work is reviewed for unit's overall adequacy in meeting organizational objectives.
  • Leadership: Middle manager who typically manages high level exempt employees, subordinate managers or supervisors and may manage multiple functions disciplines. Provides guidance based on organizational goals and company policy. Responsible for numerous functional and or technical projects. Develops and administers budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.
  • Problem Solving /Operations/Direct Work Involvement: Responsible for all projects assigned to subordinate unit. Acts as advisor to subordinate supervisors, managers, staff, to resolve technical or operational problems. Subject to approval, modifies organizational structure.
  • Client Contacts: Frequent contacts with internal and external parties at various management levels concerning operations or scheduling project phases. Communication typically involves persuasion, and negotiation with middle and senior management levels.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bilingual English and Spanish a plus.

9 years of progressively responsible Compensation experience required, including demonstrated in depth knowledge and a strong track record designing and implementing a broad range of compensation programs and plans, including compensation compliance, market analysis, pay structures and incentive plans for Executives, Sales, Managers and broad-based populations.
Proven leadership experience including 3 years in a managerial role. Skill at coaching and developing team members to optimize their potential and utilize resources effectively.

Professional designation such as CCP (Certified Compensation Professional) or CSSP (Certified Compensation Sales Professional) preferred.

Ability to plan, execute and control multiple simultaneous high impact projects, establishing realistic estimates for resources, timelines, cost and deliverables, and reporting metrics.

Ability to manage and prioritize complex changing workloads in a challenging, fast paced environment.

Solid understanding of federal, state and local of wage and hour laws and regulations to ensure company compliance.

Remain current on current compensation trends and methodologies via professional networks, publications and educational opportunities.

Excellent written, analytical, communication, problem solving, influencing and project management skills.

Detail oriented.

Computer efficiency and technical aptitude with Microsoft Excel and MS office products.
