Under the leadership of the VP of Human Resources & Administration, the Manager of Human Resources fulfills a key role on the HR team, with primary responsibilities in recruitment, employee relations and compliance. The Manager assists with the development and evaluation of programs, practices, and procedures. The HR Manager recommends new approaches to effect continual improvements in the efficiency of the HR function, implementing and administering all new approaches and recurring activities in accordance with federal and state regulations, and in relationship to LeadingAge’s core values, culture, management philosophies, policies and practices. Generally, the manager:


  • Manages recruitment resource identification, strategy, recruitment and screening; and assists hiring managers

  • Counsels staff and management on HR policy and practice interpretation and employee relations issues

  • Manages on-boarding process with hiring team

  • Manages performance appraisal process

  • Assists with benefits issue resolution and informed benefits decision-making

  • Partners with knowledge experts on internal and external staff development programs

  • Assists VP, HR & Administration with Federal, District of Columbia and multi-state compliance; and the review and resolution of employee or management issues

  • Serves as back-up on HR submissions to Payroll; FMLA/STD/LTD administration; and other programs as needed

  • Models LeadingAge Core Values in all endeavors

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the VP, HR & Administration, SVP, Operations & New Business Development and the President & CEO.


Position requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, organizational development or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Plus, a minimum of 5 years of broad and progressive hands-on experience on a variety of small human resources teams, working up and down all levels of responsibility as needed. Prior experience in an association or non-profit environment is a plus.


Other requirements include prior recruitment, employee relations and compliance experience as well as current knowledge of all the principles and practices of human resources management; current knowledge and understanding of the Federal regulations affecting human resources. Knowledge of District of Columbia regulations is highly desired. Familiarity with 403(b) Defined Contribution retirement plans is important. Must have prior experience working collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders; excellent oral/written communication, listening, interpersonal, planning, project development, negotiation and multi-tasking skills; and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Must demonstrate empathy; the ability to communicate persuasively; and have prior experience inspiring trust, confidentiality and candor. Sensitivity to diversity, organizational dynamics, issues of confidentiality; and excellent attention to detail are essential. Experience with ABRA or similar HRIS preferred. Must be proficient in cloud-based recruitment systems; and MS Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
