Position Summary

The Senior Communities & Volunteer Relations Manager will guide, support, grow and develop HRC’s volunteer-led steering committees, members of HRC’s Board of Governors and an army of volunteer advocates in an assigned portfolio of metropolitan areas for the nation’s largest civil rights organization working for LGBTQ equality. In collaboration with HRC’s Steering Committees, sub-committees and colleagues, the Manager will work to ensure HRC’s annual fundraising, membership and community engagement goals established for each Committee are achieved by attracting and retaining talented, inclusive, diverse and effective volunteer teams.

 

The Manager’s primary role will be to collaborate with local board members to help recruit and develop high-profile volunteer leaders and maintain diverse, cohesive and productive teams so each Committee, utilizing HRC’s established best practices and new strategies, will execute work plans and achieve annual goals. They will coordinate and support efforts of colleagues directly responsible for specific programming, including Federal Club, Major Donor, Gala/Dinner Events, Membership Outreach and Community Engagement. And, the Manager will provide support, guidance and collaborate with HRC’s Board of Governors and its executive and national committees.

 

This self-motivated, results-oriented individual will serve as an integral member of a staff team, ensuring the interests and needs of both HRC and its volunteers are respected and met. By providing at-a-distance and in-person guidance and support, HRC’s volunteer leaders will successfully generate organizational resources, cultivate relationships with the grasstops and mobilize the grassroots as formidable volunteer political organizers and fundraisers.

 

The Manager will create, edit and adapt content and materials for in-person, on-line and recorded training, learning and development.They will be responsible for planning and leading annual Committee retreats and volunteer training and development. They will guide volunteer leadership to set up and execute results-oriented volunteer recruitment and action events/activities to increase the number, diversity and talent of each committee’s membership, and ramp up volunteer leadership capabilities to achieve desired results towards annual steering committee goals.

 

Reporting directly to the Director of Volunteer Leadership & Strategic Development, the Manager will be a member of HRC’s fast-paced and high-performing Development Department. The Manager will interface, partner and collaborate with colleagues on-the-ground and in Washington, DC, community, business and other grasstops leaders and volunteer leaders ensuring the short and long-term interests and needs of both HRC and its volunteers are respected and met.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • GOAL ACHIEVEMENT.  Guide volunteers to accomplish organizational fundraising, membership and community engagement goals by implementing and adjusting annual work plans as the primary staff contact for leaders for assigned steering and board committees.  Partner and work closely with colleagues, steering committee co-chairs and board members to develop and inspire successful, results-oriented leaders.
  • VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP RECRUITMENT. Identify, cultivate, recruit and coach highly effective volunteer fundraisers, ambassadors and leaders by creating meaningful and rewarding experiences.
  • GROUP FACILITATION, CONFLICT MANAGEMENT & TROUBLESHOOTING.  Organize, facilitate and follow-up on small and large-group meetings, and retreats. Prepare and deliver highly-engaging/effective in-person and on-line training, presentations and discussions on a wide variety of topics.
  • REPRESENTATIVE, PRESENTER, FACILITATOR & TRAINER.  Serve as an HRC representative at activities, meetings and events around the country and provide positive enthusiasm for HRC’s mission and programs that result in inspiring volunteers to fundraise and advocate on behalf of HRC. 
  • DIVERSITY & INCLUSION. Share HRC’s commitment to inclusion and the intersectionality of our movement. Provide counsel and training to increase HRC’s volunteer leadership’s abilities to engage within diverse groups and to effectively manage conflict. Work and relate successfully with people from diverse backgrounds to accomplish key goals and objectives and create and sustain an inclusive work environment.
  • ANALYSIS AND REPORTING. Analyze and create reports and briefings on the state of HRC’s steering committees and volunteer programs for senior management and board leadership.
  • ONGOING AND SPECIAL PROJECTS.  Manage and be a productive participant in a set of assigned long, short and temporary projects. Complete required administrative work
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required, with at least four to seven years’ relevant work experience, in particular around volunteer engagement/management and within a large, complex organization.
  • Knowledgeable and personally passionate about and committed to LGBTQ equality, HRC’s mission and volunteerism.
  • Ability to inspire and influence individuals and teams, both one-on-one and in group settings, to be motivated and achieve challenging goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex and nuanced situations, anticipate needs and proactively communicate.
  • Ability/willingness to work collaboratively and provide/receive feedback
  • Experienced in public speaking, facilitation, coaching and training, learning & development. (Experience facilitating DiSC® is a plus)
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and goal-driven. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with a positive attitude, meeting tight-deadlines.
  • Skilled in fostering inclusive environments & working within diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and skill in fundraising (in particular with mid-level donor programs), team building, conflict management and leadership development
  • Experienced with on-the-ground organizing
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, promote and facilitate meetings and events
  • Strong professional ethics and acumen to deal with sensitive volunteer, community, board and organizational matters and maintain confidentiality.
  • An intermediate level of experience is required using a variety of computer skills to produce high-quality, professionally formatted reports and presentations using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Google Apps. Familiarity and prior work experience using Volunteer Management and Learning Management Systems, Adobe Captivate and Presenter and membership databases is desired.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred
  • Flexibility with work schedule. Extensive and regular overnight travel (up to 50%) is required, including weekends. Peak time period for travel is January through June.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
