Senior Consultant Associate Relations – Fortune 100 Insurance and Financial Services Company; fast paced highly engaged team environment

The Office of Associate Relations is the investigative body for associate complaints and provides counsel and guidance on a variety of associate relations and management issues.

The Senior Consultant Associate Relations role is the lead investigator and case manager for associate complaints and associate relations matters.   This includes collaborating regularly with HR Business Partners, Legal, Ethics and Compliance to address workforce issues. 

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Subject matter expert in associate relations matters
  • Investigation, case management and risk mitigation of complex associate complaints
  • Project management of initiatives with enterprise wide impact
  • Collaboration with internal clients to support business initiatives and objectives
  • Facilitating internal incident management process and procedures
  • Collaboration with legal counsel to manage complaint resolution
  • Providing the guidance and coaching necessary to build managers’ leadership skills in managing workforce interaction.

JOB SUMMARY:  Conducts advanced and highly confidential investigations of band H and above associate relations incidents and issues; partners with multiple internal resources to obtain investigational data and legal options. Monitors legislation and updates employment related policies and processes to ensure company compliance. Consults with HR, management, and associates regarding new and/or revised legislation. 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to AVP Associate Relations; No Direct Reports; may responsible for leading project teams.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conducts advanced and highly confidential  investigations of band H and above associate relations incidents and issues; partners with multiple internal resources to obtain investigational data and legal options; conducts analysis of data and options, and develops a case action plan to include recommendations to  minimize risk and exposure to the organization; produces Investigation Summary and presents summary to HR, ethics, general counsel, and business unit leadership; conducts follow up interviews with associates/management to minimize further exposure to the organization.  Performs investigations at the request of the Office of General Counsel and the Office of Ethics.
  2. Monitors legislation and updates employment related policies and processes to ensure company compliance. Consults with HR, management, and associates regarding new and/or revised legislation. Develops and facilitates targeted associate relations training and education to HR, management, and business partners.
  3. Leads associate relations analysis for large scale and/or compliance situations. Provides subject mater expertise on legal and employment trends. Partners with business unit leadership, HR leader and other internal sources on escalated employment situations.
  4. Analyzes management guides and reports to ensure consistent application of relevant company policies, procedures, employment laws and state/federal regulations. Creates and delivers communications to update local HR and management on changes in company policies, procedures, and federal/state/local laws.
  5. Maintains current knowledge of Nationwide polices and practices, and state/federal/local employment laws to ensure consistent applications of internal polices and external regulatory compliance.
  6. Interacts with associates at all levels involving sensitive legal, regulatory and management situations.  Handles all matters with discretion and maintains confidentiality of all information.
  7. Serves as the liaison to other corporate offices with OGC, Ethics, Security, Health and Wellness, Corporate Real Estate, IT, and HR resolving complex policy interpretations issues.   May serve as the primary liaison to other offices and HR.
  8. Evaluates requests for reductions in force, runs adverse impact testing, obtains OCG approvals and processes 60 day letters and severance agreements.
  9. Leads the Incident Management Team in the evaluation and the mitigation of risk where associates safety is threatened.
  10. Consults with HR and business unit leaders regarding associate releases, memorandums of understanding, and retentions agreements. Works with OCG to initiate required documents.
  11. Maintains relationships with outside vendors such as Equifax, Sedgwich, Right Management, Lee Hech etc.
  12. Collaborates with HR partners providing OAR direction and input for all mergers, acquisitions and divestitures.
  13. Facilitates Agency review boards.
  14. Serves as an OAR Customer Relations Manager for HR business leaders.
  15. Handles all matters with discretion and maintains confidentiality of all information.
  16. Performs other duties and leads/participates in special projects as assigned.

 

Requirements

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education: Undergraduate studies in human resources, law, business administration, or related discipline. Graduate level studies preferred. 

 

Designations:  SPHR certification preferred.

 

Experience:  Typically ten or more years related experience in human resources, legal or business operations. This includes at least six years of employee relations or employment law experience. Project management experience required.

 

Knowledge:  Demonstrated knowledge of associate relations and Human Resources management practices and procedures, state/federal employment laws, regulatory compliance and the legal aspects of human resources.  Project leadership experience required. In depth knowledge of related internal practices and procedures in the field of human resources and employee relations. Knowledge of insurance company operations, financial concepts, and company policies and practices.

 

Skills/ Competencies:  Must be able to conceptualize associate relations problems, define relevant issues, facilitate the determination of a methodology for resolving, define alternative and develop recommendations and solutions. Demonstrated process improvement and project management skills. Must have well-developed verbal and written communication skills for interaction with all levels of associates including top management, other departments, and external contacts such as regulatory agencies.  Must possess strong negotiation and decision making skills.  Ability to work well on team projects and collaborate with other departments.
