Columbia University in the City of New York is currently seeking applications for a Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). The CHRO of the university provides strategic leadership on human resource matters to Columbia University’s officers, faculty, and staff, acting at all times as the steward of staff resources in service to the university’s mission. The VP, HR will lead an activist HR organization of 103 full-time employees that delivers well-conceived and well-designed services to the university’s exempt, non-exempt, and contingent staff employees. The VP, HR will enhance the organization’s effectiveness in providing proactive and focused support, guidance, and training to academic and business units across the university that enables them to meet their strategic objectives. To achieve department and university goals, the VP, HR will oversee a function characterized by operational and service delivery excellence and efficiency.

The university’s structure, its academic culture, and its tradition of faculty governance require the VP, HR to lead through a combination of direct authority, business acumen, functional expertise, and influence. In this culture, the VP, HR will require excellent communication skills, a demonstrated ability to interact comfortably with a wide range of constituents, and particular effectiveness in communicating with and representing employees at all levels. The VP, HR will possess demonstrated success in negotiating and advocating contracts and relationships that advance the mission of the university and meet the needs of faculty and staff.

Master’s degree or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years of directly related experience are required.  At least 10 years of experience in human resources management are required, preferably coupled with leadership experience in a business unit. A strong background in compensation and/or employee relations is highly preferred.
