Job Details

The VP & Chief People Officer (CPO) provides vision, leadership and operational management of GuideOne's human capital strategies, aligning with the strategic direction and culture of the company. 

The VP & CPO leads the full range of HR functions including talent acquisition, organizational design and effectiveness, performance management, diversity and inclusion, employee relations, compensation and benefits, payroll, succession management and employee learning and development.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads the planning and development of human resource strategies that support the company’s strategic plan, and develops and fosters the employee value proposition and GuideOne employment brand.
  • Provides strategic counsel and coaching to senior leaders with focus on leadership, change management, employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, recruiting and retaining top talent, developing people and organizational effectiveness.
  • Serves as a catalyst for honest/critical conversations and culture change. Stewards the company culture by recognizing, articulating, and shaping the need for change. Manages the people implications of change and provides expertise in the identification, development, and implementation of best practices and process improvements.
  • Manages all aspects of the human resources functions of the company, ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations relating to human capital management and employment. 
  • Drives integrated talent acquisition, management and development, compensation, and performance and succession management strategies.  Aligns organizational capabilities and human resources policy and practices with strategic plan goals and objectives. Translates the strategic corporate plans into HR operational plans and successfully implements.
  • Leads, manages and develops the HR team with a hands-on proactive approach.  Builds and maintains a high-performing team; selects, develops, coaches, rewards and recognizes team members.
  • Monitors and evaluates current HR processes and programs to ensure compliance, maximum service delivery and operational efficiency and effectiveness. 
  • Leads the design and administration of competitive rewards program including comprehensive compensation and benefit plans aimed at the health, wealth and wellness of our workforce; ensures these programs serve to recruit and retain employees at all levels.
  • Works with external vendors and partners in researching and negotiating benefits and total rewards.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of an effective wellness program.
  • Partners in the development of competitive performance based compensation programs to motivate, incent, award and retain employees; leads the design and administration of all sales incentives and broad based employee short and long term incentive and deferred compensation plans; oversees the establishment and administration of the company’s annual wage/salary budget.
  • Directs all payroll processes and practices including compliance with applicable tax law and other regulatory requirements.
  • Leads HR Business Partner team to develop and implement human capital strategies, including change management, organizational development, workforce planning, succession planning, performance management and employee relations.
  • Provides strategic guidance and oversight for the corporate learning and development function in managing and supporting the assessment of organizational needs, and the design, delivery and evaluation of training and development programs for both leaders and staff that facilitate the professional development and continuous learning of the organization.
  • Leads GuideOne’s corporate diversity and inclusion initiatives
  • Effectively communicates people needs and plans to the executive team with a data driven approach; leads the development of regular human capital management reports and metrics for senior management. 
  • Oversees analysis and reporting of employee engagement surveys and succession plans.  Utilizes employee engagement and succession data to assist managers and employees in driving increased engagement results and enhance recruitment and retention.
  • Advises the Human Resources Committee of the Board of Directors to assist in meeting committee objectives, including but not limited to, matters related to top executive compensation, benefits and evaluation of performance, and employee benefits.
  • Serves as a key member of Senior Staff, providing current industry perspectives, coaching, trends and strategic objectives to CEO, senior staff and Board of Directors as a trusted resource and advisor.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

Requirements

Required experience/credentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources management, social science or related field of study, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
  • Ten (10)+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience with responsibility for all HR disciplines, including organizational development, compensation and benefits, talent acquisition, payroll, learning and development, and human resource management.
  • Ten (10)+ years of significant leadership experience at a strategic level working with senior leaders  to create and execute people strategy as well as drive change at the strategic level.

Preferred experience/credentials:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration or related field preferred.
  • SHRM-SCP, CCP or CEBS/GBA professional designation(s) desired.
  • Five (5)+ years of experience in the insurance industry preferred.
  • Prefer experience including, but not limited to: Large scale transformation involving all aspects of HR. Building a workforce strategy that supports overall business strategy and proactively addresses talent gaps. Restructuring and enhancing organizational design to improve effectiveness. Leveraging change management principles and tools to architect the culture needed to drive growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong working relationships, particularly with senior executives.
  • Strong mastery and understanding of all human capital management and employment laws, rules and regulations.
  • High degree of personal credibility, influencing and negotiation skills; strong leadership maturity and ability to lead through others.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and act with the utmost of ethics and integrity.
  • Proven ability to create and/or oversee employee learning and development programs.
  • Strong skills and abilities in leading and supervising the operational aspects of the human resources function.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, negotiate and deliver welfare and retirement benefit programs that are competitive, both geographically and amongst our industry peer group.
  • Able to develop effective interpersonal and working relationships based on trust and mutual respect.
  • Demonstrated skill in maneuvering comfortably though complex policy, process, and people-related organizational dynamics.
  • Able to represent GuideOne effectively with other companies, associations, community and philanthropic groups; proven ability to serve as a role model, ambassador and business leader, both internally and externally.
  • Able to think, plan and act strategically, engaging with senior company officers and the Board.
  • Capable of delivering strategically-focused organizational development and human resources business solutions.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of pension, 401(k), and non-qualified plans.
  • Is current on PPACA and is knowledgeable of welfare programs including medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, STD and LTD as well as other paid leave programs.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Utilizes superior project management techniques; adept at coaching and mentoring and able to provide guidance and a results-oriented focus to department personnel.
  • Able to effectively communicate clearly and concisely ideas, concepts and proposals verbally and in written form.
  • Able to compare data to formulate and prepare budgets, long range goals and reports.
  • Able to evaluate financial information.
